De Owczarek Nizinny is een van de Poolse herdershonden. Dit ras komt uit de Laagvlakte, terwijl de andere Poolse Herdershond Owczarek Podhalanski(de Tatrahond) uit de hoogvlakte komt. Waarschijnlijk is het ras met de Hunnen naar Polen gekomen. Vooral in de omgeving van Wojewodschaft Bydgoszsz hielden boeren een dichtbehaard herdershondje dat verwantschap vertoont met onder andere onze eigen Schapendoes, de Bearded Collie en de Bobtail. Dit hondje was een veelzijdige helper van de herder. Het duurde echter een tijd voordat het ras aandacht kreeg van kynologen en werd tentoongesteld. Op een gegeven moment was er een reu, "Smok" genaamd die qua uiterlijk en innerlijk ideaal was. Deze hond werd de grondslag voor de verdere fok. Mevrouw Danuta Kordegarda bouwde een prachtige stam op deze hond. In 1963 werd het ras erkend door de FCI. Momenteel geniet dit ras een steeds groter wordende populariteit en komt steeds vaker op tentoonstellingen voor.

Algemeen:

De Owczarek Nizinny is een middelmatig grote hond, compact gebouwd, sterk en gespierd. Het lichaam is matig lang met brede en diepe borst. De ribben zijn goed gerond. Licht gebouwde benen, niet te kort doch sterk. Matig lange hals zonder keelhuid.

Kleur:

Elke kleur en aftekening toegestaan.

Hoofd en schedel:

Het hoofd is matig groot, goed in verhouding en zeker niet grof. Beharing dicht op de schedel. De schedel verhoudt zich als 1:1 tot de voorsnuit. Eventueel is de voorsnuit iets korter. Matig brede schedel, licht gewelfd. De stop is goed aangegeven. Rechte neusrug en krachtige kaken. Grote donkere neus met goed geopende neusgaten. Middelmatig grote ogen, ovaal van vorm, met een levendige en doordringende blik. Oren van middelmatige grootte, hartvormig breed en hoog aangezet. De voorkant van het oor ligt tegen de wang aan. Schaargebit.

Staart:

Gecoupeerd of van nature zonder staart.

Poten:

Ovaal met gesloten iets gebogen tenen. Nagels zo donker mogelijk.

Beharing:

Lang, dicht en grof. De ondervacht is wollig en dicht.Er zijn 2 type vachten nl. het werktype:stug en korter en het showtype:iets zachter dan het werktype maar wel veel langer soms bijna tot de grond aan toe. En de lange hoofdharen bedekken de ogen op karakteristieke wijze. Schofthoogte: Reu 45 - 50 cm, Teef: 42 - 47 cm.

De Polski Owczarek Nizinny Club in Nederland telt ongeveer 450 leden. De vereniging organiseert jaarlijks een clubmatch, jonge hondendag, wandelingen, een spelletjes dag voor baas en hond en inventarisatie dagen. Het clubblad wordt 6 maal per jaar uitgegeven.

PONs belong to the numerous family of herding dogs. They exhibit certain characteristics of the smaller sheepdog - a tendency for a squarely built body; a smooth, efficient trot; a strong, long protective coat; a loyal personality with strong herding instincts; a suspicion of strangers; a highly developed sense of territory; and a strong sense of independence.

Temperament:

The PON is clever and perceptive, with an excellent memory. It is important to realize that the PON needs a dominant master and good consistent training from the time it is very young. If this is not provided, the PON will tend to dominate its master.

The PON needs close contact with people and loves to have a job. They are most eager to please in any task you can provide them to accomplish.

It is very easy to train a PON for good behavior. They are so intelligent that a little bit of work by its master will go a long way and benefit the entire family. PONs have no problem accepting the needs of an entire family.

Coat:

The standard requires that the dog be double coated with a soft, dense undercoat, well covered by a long, dense, thick, shaggy, and reasonably straight coat. Dogs exhibited in the show ring are required to be shown in their natural state. This means that dogs must not be trimmed. All coat colors are acceptable. The most common coat colors are white with black, gray or sandy patches, and gray with white or chocolate. Very rarely are they all white, all black, or black and tan. Most PONs carry a dominant "fading" factor genetically, which results in puppies being born darker in coat color than they will appear as adults, with the exception of those puppies born white.

If you want your PON to look nice all the time, you must be prepared to brush his hair thoroughly a few times a week and keep him clean. Use a good flexible pin brush, not a slicker brush, which will remove the undercoat.It is important to get the PON accustomed to grooming at an early age. Brushing your puppy for a few minutes everyday will get him acquainted with grooming. As the puppy gets older, his undercoat will start to come in and if not routinely brushed, serious matts will develop. It will be more difficult to get these matts out if your puppy is not familiar with being brushed, lying on his side and back.

Following some simple guidelines in training and grooming will provide you with the joy of owning one these fabulous shaggy dogs.

 

The Polski Owczarek Nizinny Club in Nederland has ± 450 members. The PON club annually organizes a clubmatch, a youngsters show (3 months- 2 years) familyday: where we play games with our dogs and walk together. We also organize inventory-days, that is when the PON's are selected for breeding. The clubmagazine has 6 issues each year.
